Most designers will tell you they create beautiful spaces. I do that too. But I’m also designing environments that shape how you feel, how you connect, and how your days unfold. I help people live better lives through design. That’s a bigger job than choosing the right sofa, and it’s the work I find most meaningful.

What intentional design actually means

Intentional design is not a style. It’s a way of working.

It starts with understanding how you live, how your mornings run, where you gather, what drains your energy and what restores it. Before anything is selected, drawn, or specified, I want to understand the ecosystem of your home and the life you want it to support.

This approach comes directly from my background in occupational therapy, where I learned to see homes not as collections of rooms, but as environments that shape behaviour, support wellbeing, and reflect identity. A home designed with intention doesn’t just look right — it works. It supports the flow of your daily life, creates moments of calm, and holds the people inside it in a way that feels genuinely theirs.

Your home isn’t just where life happens, it’s shaping how you live it

Think of it this way: just as you might visualise the life you want before it takes shape, 3D design is a vision board for your home, mapping the end result first, then working backwards with intention to get there. Your environment is either supporting who you are becoming, or quietly holding you back. Intentional design makes sure it’s doing the former.

The long way around was the right way

My background is in occupational therapy, but it was my own homes that people kept responding to. My mother-in-law walked through my renovated home after I finished my OT degree and said, ‘you studied in the wrong area.’ My aunty said something similar. When a family friend asked if I’d design their home and offered to pay me, I knew it was time to take it seriously.

I’d just had my third child, so the timing wasn’t right. But the seed was planted. I went and studied interior design properly, and followed what I’d always known — that I was meant to be designing homes. Christine Fletcher Design grew from there.

What I brought with me from occupational therapy wasn’t just a qualification — it was a way of seeing homes that most designers don’t have. A clinical understanding of how environments affect the people inside them. How a space can support function or inhibit it. How the layout of a room changes how people connect. How the home you live in quietly shapes the person you become.

Every home I’ve designed has been intentional

I built Christine Fletcher Design from the ground up — as a mother of three, returning to the Gold Coast after time in Melbourne — because I believe that meaningful work and a present, full life don’t have to be in tension. They belong together. And the way I’ve built this business is proof of that.

Every home I’ve designed has been intentional, built around the people living in it and made to last. That’s not just my professional approach. It’s how I live myself.
